So obvious, but so true…
Who doesn’t want to be in the right place at the right time in order to land a perfect opportunity? Whether it be the opportunity to be the first in line at a busy coffee shop or the opportunity for a better job position, we all want to have that ONE chance.
We know that we work hard and giving up is never in our vocabulary, but it just seems as if the opportunity we want never knocks on our door. It’s not only that, the opportunity we want doesn’t seem to favor us at all. You see the opportunity you seek was given to someone else entirely.
Not being chosen most of the time leads you to ask yourself several questions. The one question that would probably be at the top of your list is “What am I doing wrong?”. However, rather than keep wondering why you never get the opportunity that others have, why not start looking at yourself to find the answers? In fact, it is quite simple. You want to know what that is?
You don’t pay attention.
Yes, opportunities aren’t things that come by once in a lifetime. In fact, you may not even know it, but you are actually surrounded by opportunities. In other words, you are always in the right place at the right time. The only problem is that you refuse to see it.
You fail to open your eyes to the endless opportunities that surround you. Then you keep bemoaning the fact that you weren’t given the opportunity and so on. But it actually just starts with you not willing to see what is right in front of you.
Those around you who have seized opportunities had their eyes wide open. They saw an opportunity for a jackpot, and they never kept their eyes off the prize. So, what happened in the end? They were able to get the opportunity they’ve always wanted in life.
Think of it this way: the world you live in is brimming with opportunities. Ignore it and you will never get the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream.
So what Is Opportunity?
Here’s an example of a very badly missed opportunity:
Let’s say that your interests outside of work is being online visiting different sites, interacting on social media platforms, or writing content for your blog. Despite this great amount of time spent online, you never once glance at your email. Or, if you do check it once in a while, you just ignore several of the mails you receive.
Now, what if one of those emails contained content about a job opportunity? Whether it was from an old colleague or someone who got your email address from one of your friends, opportunities can came in the form of electronic mail. Since you chose to ignore this mail, you have lost one opportunity to achieve something you’ve always wanted in life: a new job opportunity in a field that is most desirable to you.
Don’t always think about email as spam messages or a silly product promotion. You never know that one of them might contain the key to what you’ve been seeking all along. It pays to be wary given what can be done with emails these days, but don’t let this ruin your chances of seeking a better future.
Here’s another example of another missed opportunity:
Let’s say you run a company, but you never really give much thought to your employees. Now, what if one of your workers is a Steve Jobs in the making? He’s got all the ideas that can make your company really grow. However, you never give him the chance to shine because his job is not at all important to you.
What if this person leaves your company to find better opportunities elsewhere? What if the company he transferred to suddenly becomes the new talk of the town because of a new innovation. How would you feel when you find out that it was one of your former employees who actually suggested this innovation? This is one of the hardest things about not seeing an opportunity right in front of your eyes.
Missed opportunities are everywhere. Maybe you found that air pressure was light in your car, but you chose to ignore it. Maybe by paying attention to it, you wouldn’t have met an accident.
Maybe you found an article that you thought was worth sharing with your friends, but were too lazy to do it. That article contained tips that you could apply to change your life for the better, but you blew it by choosing to ignore it.
Missed opportunities are a shot to the heart. They make you ask a lot of “What ifs?”. However, you already know the answer to that, and that is you never really paid close attention. You simply let opportunities pass you by.
You have to keep in mind that we are now living in an age of information, and our minds can’t just ignore the information that we get each and every day. We have rules about what to process and what to ignore, and the sad thing is: most opportunities get ignored automatically.
The one rule you shouldn’t forget about, the one rule you should always pay attention to is the one you ALWAYS choose to forget, and that is DON’T IGNORE ANYTHING. Just for one day, try to pay close attention, then attach meaning to what you just learned, then take action about everything you see.
Take a deep breath. Look around you. Think about all the bills you need to pay. Look at all the spam you’re getting in your mailbox. Check all of your unanswered emails and calls. Ponder about your job. Think about your family. Take a look at everything right at this very moment.
By doing so, you’ll notice that opportunities are knocking on your door right this very instant. Open it. (As I was writing this very line, I got a knock on my door from my landlord. They handed me a note that said rent will be raised three months from now. Now, this is news, isn’t it? Maybe this news will give me the opportunity for something new. I can move to a better place or I can buy a better one. There is no way I couldn’t have come up with this idea if I didn’t answer the knock of my landlord on the door.)
I’ve taken the first opportunity I got, how about you?
It’s time to make your move.
Not tomorrow or the next day but right now!
